Eva Marie Saint: She Won an Oscar, Then Told Hollywood No

On March 30, 1955, Eva Marie Saint accepted an Academy Award for her very first film, On the Waterfront. She was nine months pregnant, and her son was born two days later. Then, at the height of her fame, she did something almost no movie star ever does: she told Hollywood that her family came first. This is the story of the teacher's daughter from New Jersey who danced with Marlon Brando at her audition, became Alfred Hitchcock's coolest heroine in North by Northwest, turned down the studios, stayed married for 65 years, and walked back onto the Oscar stage at 93 to joke that she was older than the Academy itself. Eva Marie Saint died on October 6, 2026, at the age of 102. This video is commentary and education. It uses no film footage: the images are public-domain publicity photos, posters and trailer frames, plus photographs shared under Creative Commons licenses.
