Laura Dolan is a content marketing leader in Columbus, Ohio, looking for a director-level content role, such as content director, head of content, or editorial director. Guest page: https://tellmeaboutatime.io/guests/laura-d... LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/laura-dolan-62... Laura Dolan has spent 20 years in editorial and content marketing. She has written for energy, food and beverage, semiconductors, and her favorite: software for the towing industry. In this episode, we talk about tow trucks, AI slop, and why marketing is unpredictable. Laura started as a journalist and got into marketing by accident. In 2010, she was a staff writer for a publisher of 26 digital magazines. She became editor in chief of its B2B food and beverage magazine and ran its blogs, email, and social media. At Traxero (now Autura), her audience was tow truck drivers and tow business owners. They work long hours and have no time to read. But they spend all day in the truck. So she launched a podcast, Traxero On the Go. It reached 3,000 downloads in its first year, and customers at trade shows knew her from it. Then we turn to the job search. Laura has seen recruiters take calls, eat, and even vape during her interviews. She treats every interview as a two-way conversation, not an interrogation. She tracks every application. And she does not count "position filled" as a rejection. They just didn't get to her in time. She ends with a tip for job seekers: join Slack communities like Next Kahuna, Superpath, and RevGenius. Some jobs show up there before they hit LinkedIn. Where is your audience when they have time to listen? 0:00 Marketing is unpredictable 0:37 Meet Laura 1:03 20 years in content 2:39 How she got into marketing 5:51 The LinkedIn impressions drop 7:19 AI against AI in the job search 9:43 Why this show 10:47 Producing podcasts and repurposing content 12:20 Interview etiquette is one-sided 14:42 Interviews as two-way conversations 17:11 "Position filled" is not a rejection 19:00 Tracking every application 21:03 AI slop 23:10 A podcast for tow truck drivers 29:13 Shared experiences 33:33 What she wants next 35:58 Advice: join Slack communities
