Gilgamesh, the king of Uruk, is two-thirds god and a hard, cruel ruler, until the gods make the wild man Enkidu to match him and the two become best friends. Together they kill Humbaba, the monster who guards the cedar forest, and the Bull of Heaven that the goddess Ishtar sends against Uruk, and the gods decide that Enkidu must die for it. Afraid of dying himself, Gilgamesh walks through the mountain of the sun and crosses the Waters of Death to find Utnapishtim, the man who lived through the great flood, and asks him how he escaped death. He fails Utnapishtim's test, loses the plant of youth to a snake, and comes home to the walls of Uruk.
Based on the Epic of Gilgamesh: the Standard Babylonian tablets I to XI, with the Old Babylonian Pennsylvania, Yale and Sippar tablets, and the Atrahasis epic for Utnapishtim's story of the flood. This is an ancient Mesopotamian epic, told as a sleep story.
