The rain has stopped, the Sun is out, and Peep spots a rainbow! Did somebody paint it up there? No! You can't paint the sky. 🌈🐥 In this science video for kids aged 4 to 6, Peep finds out sunlight's secret: it looks white, but it's made of all the colours mixed together. Up close, one raindrop catches a sunbeam: the light bends as it goes in, bounces off the back of the drop, and bends again on the way out. Each colour bends a little bit differently, so the colours spread out like a fan! Millions of raindrops make a big arch, red on the top and purple at the bottom, and you see it when the Sun is behind you and the rain is in front. You can even make your own with a garden sprinkler! We finish with a "Your Turn!" quiz to pause and answer. ✨ In this video • Is a rainbow painted on the sky? (No!) • Sunlight's secret: all the colours mixed together • Inside a raindrop: bend, bounce, bend • Why the colours spread out like a fan • Red on the top, purple at the bottom • Where to stand to see a rainbow • Make your own rainbow with a sprinkler • A pause-and-answer quiz 📖 Chapters 0:00 How does a rainbow get in the sky? 0:17 1. White sunlight is a mix of all the colours. In a raindrop, light refracts (bends) as it enters, reflects off the back of the drop, and refracts again as it leaves; each colour bends by a slightly different amount (dispersion), so the colours separate. Each drop sends one colour to your eye, so a rainbow is made by millions of drops. In the main bow red is on the outside and violet (shown as purple) on the inside. A rainbow appears opposite the Sun, so the Sun must be behind you. Try it: on a sunny day, stand with your back to the Sun and look into the mist from a garden sprinkler or hose. Pairs well with "Why Is the Sky Blue?". 🔔 Subscribe to Toonibee Tales for more learning videos, bedtime stories and sing-along rhymes. #science #rainbow #kidsscience
