This move signals the end of more than two decades of U.S. military involvement since 2003. High concerns have arisen that Iran and its supported militant groups could use the power vacuum created by the withdrawal of foreign forces to further strengthen their control and influence over Iraq. Additionally, due to the release and entry of several ISIS (Islamic State) militants into Iraq, there are fears that the group could take advantage of this departure to stage a resurgence. Although the new Iraqi Prime Minister, Ali Al-Zaidi, promised to disarm the Iran-backed militants in the country, the groups' low willingness to disarm alongside severe logistical challenges pose major hurdles. Even though the U.S. military has left Iraq, arguments suggest that the U.S. must continue applying pressure through diplomacy and economics (sanctions) to prevent the country from falling under Iranian influence. Conversely, it is being argued that the departure of the U.S. military deprives the militants of their primary justification for existence—resisting "U.S. occupation." We will examine this in detail.
