The Southwest Airlines meltdown of December 2022: more than 16,700 flights cancelled in 11 days, and over two million passengers caught up in it. A winter storm started it. But the storm hit every airline. Why did Southwest fall so much further behind?
On December 26, 2022, Southwest cut its schedule to about one-third, on purpose, so crews and planes could find each other again. Nineteen days earlier, it had shown investors a plan to rebuild and grow. In between sits a quieter story: the order in which Southwest was upgrading its computer systems, and where crew scheduling stood when the storm hit. Using the Senate hearing record, Southwest's own review, DOT and BTS records, this film asks one question: did the order of Southwest's upgrades leave its crew system too weak to recover?
Every factual claim is sourced to public records, company filings and reputable reporting, listed below.
