Spirit Airlines: Saved by a Judge. Gone Two Years Later.

In January 2024, a federal judge blocked JetBlue's $3.8 billion purchase of Spirit Airlines to protect travelers who relied on its cheap fares. He ended his ruling with a line for them: "To those dedicated customers of Spirit, this one's for you." On May 2, 2026, Spirit shut down. This is the story in between: the $45 bag, the 2022 bidding war, two bankruptcies in nine months, a $500 million rescue that fell apart over one weekend, who each side blamed, and what happened to fares on the routes Spirit used to fly.
