#NOTHING GOOD CAN COME FROM THIS
[Intro — a crisp knock, low strings, ticking percussion]
[Male lead — Dorian, restrained disbelief]
A letter.
Black wax.
A royal seal.
Mordain the Deathless.
…
What the hell is this?
[Verse 1]
“To Lord Dorian and Lady Celestia,
An invitation to attend
An evening at our royal table.”
Since when are we friends?
“The wine has been selected.
The arrangements are complete.
We eagerly anticipate
Your company at the feast.”
No stated cause.
No explanation.
Just a date and what to wear.
[Pre-Chorus — drums begin building]
I check the wax.
I check the paper.
Hold the writing to the light.
No compulsion.
No enchantment.
I don’t know which is worse.
[Chorus — driving, increasingly emphatic]
Nothing good can come from this!
A royal feast.
An undead host.
A guest list he forgot to list!
I know how these evenings go.
This is how the trouble starts.
Someone says,
“It’s only dinner.”
Then the negotiations start.
nothing good can come from this!
[Verse 2]
“The wine has been selected.”
For the meal?
Or for the sacrifice?
“He wants our company.”
For what?
And for how long?
[Pre-Chorus — faster]
“No gifts required.”
“Your presence will suffice.”
That is what you tell the subject
When they are
the offering of the night
[Chorus]
Nothing good can come from this!
A pleasant meal.
A private chamber.
Something waiting to read you
Your last rites.
He can call it hospitality.
He can pour expensive wine.
But an immortal doesn’t need to hurry—
We could stay at home.
Just a quiet evening with the family...
Because nothing good can come from this!
[Verse 3 — precise, gathering momentum]
I sit down to write our answer.
“With regret, we must decline.”
Then consider whether that
Would be interpreted as slight.
Would he write another letter?
Would he send his army to enquire?
No.
We should attend
How many contingencies
Are required?
How long has he been planning this
[Bridge — half-time, increasingly elaborate]
are all the guests his rivals
And he means to burn us down.
Perhaps the feast concludes a treaty
And attendance means surrender
[Brief silence]
This is how Mother does it.
First, a harmless invitation.
Then, a reason you should stay.
Then, by morning,
Something permanent
Has happened anyway.
This is why Lucan ran away...
[Final Chorus — full band, dignified exasperation]
Nothing good can come from this!
Who else does he have on this list?
I have checked the seal for curses.
I have read it forty times.
Every sentence sounds more sinister
The more he sounds polite!
We could stay at home
Just a quiet dinner with the family…
Because nothing good can come from this.
