Dawn in the Congo rainforest. Inside a hollow log, two six-week-old leopard cubs are asleep. Then thirty chimpanzees come down out of the trees, screaming, hair on end. They know what is inside the log, and they know the mother is not there. The biggest male reaches in. And out of the ferns behind him comes the one animal in this forest he should never have made angry. Follow one leopard mother, Zola, and her two cubs, Moto and Nuru, through a year in the deep Congo Basin, the forest without lions. She moves her den again and again, carries her cubs across a forest river at night, faces down an African rock python, guards them from crowned eagles in the canopy, and teaches them to hunt in a forest where the apes she hunts would kill her children. Chapters: 00:00 Thirty apes at the den 00:54 The Congo: the forest without lions 04:44 The first den 08:24 The clearing 11:12 The apes who hunt leopards 15:33 The river 18:50 The lessons 22:45 Danger from the sky 24:57 The dry season 27:08 How she kept them alive Animals in this film: African leopard (Panthera pardus), common chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla), bonobo (Pan paniscus), African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis), forest buffalo (Syncerus caffer nanus), red river hog (Potamochoerus porcus), blue and forest duikers (Cephalophinae), sitatunga (Tragelaphus spekii), African crowned eagle (Stephanoaetus coronatus), African rock python (Python sebae), Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus), colobus and other monkeys, African grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus) and pangolins. The story is built from real behaviour and research: leopards as the top predator of the Congo forest, chimpanzees mobbing and even killing leopard cubs, mothers moving dens to keep cubs hidden, crowned eagles taking young primates and small cats, forest elephants opening clearings (bais) in the forest, and the Congo River as a wall between chimpanzees and bonobos. Zola, Moto, Nuru and Kibo are names we gave to tell it. Filmed with licensed wildlife footage. A few scenes no camera has caught this close, such as the chimpanzees at the den, the mother's charge, the river crossing at night, the python and the eagle, are recreated with generated video and marked as altered content.
