What Actually Happens to Recycling? Inside a Recycling Factory

What actually happens after we put something in the recycling bin? I recently visited Reclaim, a recycling business in Aotearoa New Zealand, and came away with a new appreciation for the science, economics and complexity behind recycling. In this episode of Beyond the Bin by Eco Kids Collective, we look beyond the recycling symbol to explore how materials are recovered, why different plastics have different recycling requirements, and why something that is technically recyclable isn't always recycled in practice. We'll also explore the role of infrastructure, processing costs and material markets, and why understanding the entire recycling system matters when we talk about environmental sustainability. IN THIS EPISODE • What happens after recycling is collected • Plastic recycling and the science of materials • Why not all recyclable materials are actually recycled • The economics and infrastructure behind resource recovery • The environmental footprint of recycling • What this means for waste and sustainability education WHY THIS MATTERS FOR EDUCATORS Waste education can be about much more than teaching children which bin to use. It can help children explore materials, investigate decomposition, ask scientific questions and understand the interconnected systems that shape our environment. This episode is the beginning of Beyond the Bin, a series exploring the science, systems and stories behind waste in Aotearoa New Zealand.
