What happens when you travel with no plan - only an intention? For this little road trip through Senja in Northern Norway, my best friend Lena and I had two and a half days, a terrible weather forecast and absolutely no itinerary. We knew we wanted to spend time together, be outside, move our bodies, have fun… and let everything else figure itself out. A couple of years ago, we accidentally discovered this way of travelling on a trip to Scotland. Life got too busy to plan anything, so we simply showed up and winged it - and somehow, we loved it! Since then, I’ve started bringing more of that philosophy into my travels and, honestly, into life in general: know what matters to you, but stay flexible about how you get there. This time, Senja gave us plenty of opportunities to practice. We hiked into the mountains despite a very questionable weather forecast, turned around before the summit when the fog swallowed the mountain, slept in my car while the rain poured outside, rented sea kayaks and paddled between little islands, jumped into the cold Norwegian sea, warmed ourselves up in a sauna and jacuzzi, cooked dinner on the beach and generally made things up as we went. But this trip was also about something I’ve been thinking about a lot: travelling with other people. Solo travel gives you complete freedom, but travelling with someone you love can be just as wonderful when you communicate what you actually want from the experience. Different energy levels, different wishes and changing weather don’t necessarily have to ruin a trip. Sometimes one person wants to sleep while the other works. Sometimes one wants to hide from the rain and midges while the other cooks outside. You don’t have to want exactly the same thing every minute to have an amazing adventure together. Maybe the best trips aren’t the ones that go according to plan. Maybe they’re the ones where you stop comparing reality to the version you imagined beforehand - and start enjoying what’s actually happening. -------------------------------- Welcome to Wander and Frame - a channel about adventure living in Norway, outdoor life, road trips, hiking, camping, car camping, kayaking, solo adventures, travelling with friends and finding ways to fit more adventure into an ordinary life.
