Spend enough years in the Appalachian Mountains, and you start to see things in these woods that nobody from away would ever believe are real. Folks hear about them and figure we are pulling their leg. We are not. Every one of them is out there, you can go and see them for yourself, and the old folks had a way of explaining each one, handed down over the years.
One day, cutting timber way back in a holler I had never been up before, I came on an old house with the front door standing open. What I saw when I looked inside stopped me right where I stood, and to this day, I still wonder what happened to the people who lived there.
I'm Omer Crum. I am eighty years old, and I cut timber for forty years in the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Kentucky. Some of these things I have seen personally, and some the old folks handed down to me, and I will tell you plainly which is which.
In this video, I am going to walk you through seven things in these woods you would never believe are real. Some of them even the old folks could not explain. Stones that come up out of the ground shaped like a cross. An old pickup way back in the woods, miles from any road, with a big tree growing right up through the middle of it. A hill where a car in neutral rolls uphill with nobody touching the gas, and a rainbow that shows up in the middle of the night. And at the end, I will tell you what somebody built over the graves in an old family graveyard up on a ridge, and why it still gives me chills.
Some things, you have to see with your own eyes before you will ever believe them.
What is the strangest thing you ever saw in the woods where you live? Tell me in the comments, and tell me where you are from. I read every one of them.
If you enjoy these stories from the mountains, subscribe and ring the bell.
Stay sharp. Stay humble. And remember, these mountains don't warn you twice.
I'll see you back on the porch.
