The Green Lakes are nestled between South Sister Mountain and Broken Top Mountain making it a genuine Alpine Wonderland Zone - the phrase "Alpine Eye Candy" often comes to mind. It is one of the PREMIER Out & Back Day Hikes in ALL of Central Oregon and can also be used as an access point to Broken Top Loop, one of the Top 3 Alpine Backpacking Loops in Oregon! The most common Day Hike Turnaround Points are Green Lake (the bigger one), Upper Green Lake (the jade green one), Golden Lake (a bit higher if feeling adventurous), or even over to Broken Top Summit Zone (no climbing equipment/skills required)! Not only is this an incredible ascension through Three Sisters Wilderness - but the Trail itself parallels Fall Creek as it climbs - there are SO MANY WATERFALLS that they are too innumerable to count! Please note that Fall Creek Falls itself is about 0.1 Miles off Green Lakes Trail to the Right when you first make contact with the Waterfall Zone of Fall Creek - that is the Tallest Drop but just one of MANY Waterfalls in this Zone! About 2 miles in on Green Lakes Trail is a Junction to turn Left on Moraine Lake Trail - the first critical Trail Junction of the Hike. Green Lakes is arguably THE BEST BACKPACKING LAKE IN CASCADE LAKES SCENIC BYWAY AND ONE OF THE BEST IN THE STATE OF OREGON - The Green Lakes Designated Camping Zone, consisting of both Green Lake and Upper Green Lake, has 22 Designated Campsites - Here are Maps at the Trailhead (32:52) - Tents should be placed within 15 FT of a Post indicating a Designated Campsite - it is advised to ONLY CAMP in a Designated Campsite to prevent erosion in this pristine serene Alpine Wonderland Zone. Fires are PROHIBITED in this area - the official rule is above 5700' which encompasses the entire Zone. This is a GREAT RULE in that it's just too beautiful from one person's mistake to risk a devastating wildfire! Nearby Moraine Lake also has 22 Designated Campsites and a Map with their locations - put together there are 44 Designated Campsites in this overall zone making it a Backpackers veritable Disneyland Zone! This Hike was done on May 7, 2026, the Day the Gate for Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway opened earlier in the Day at 8:00 AM. Due to the severely low Snowpack from the 25'/26' Winter Season, it was one of the earliest opening of the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway - still very much in the heart of Spring! There was a lot of Snow on the Trail which I had anticipated prior to starting the Hike. I Hiked up to the first Critical Trail Junction - Moraine Lake Trail - as a 4 Mile, ~550 FT Elevation Gain Out & Back Day Hike - with a heavy emphasis on Fall Creek - capturing various perspectives and vantage points - this whole Hike was in essence about Fall Creek! You start the Hike in Deschutes National Forest briefly before crossing an iconic Rustic Log Bridge and officially entering Three Sisters Wilderness. PLEASE NOTE this Hike is in the Cascade Permit System from 6/15 - 10/15 - since my Hike was 5/7 it was outside of the window requiring a Permit. They cost $1 on Recreation.gov. Dogs are required on Leash from 7/15 - 9/15. Nearby Deschutes National Forest Campgrounds.....
