A white bounty hunter named Burrell runs a small gang that makes its living tracking freed and runaway Black men and returning them south for payment, and he has learned something useful: a thirteen-year-old Black boy can walk into a Union camp, earn a man's trust, and have him moving south before the man understands what he agreed to. Will has been doing this work long enough to know what it costs and young enough to tell himself the cost belongs to someone else. His uncle Marcus — abusive, opportunistic, operating entirely in self-preservation — is his travelling companion and his warden simultaneously. The mission is Nate: a freed man working as a gravedigger for the Union army, wanted south of the line for reasons the gang's employer has not fully explained, and not crossing that line on his own for reasons that make complete sense. Will tells him his dying brother wants to see him one last time. Nate hesitates. Then he agrees. The road south is long, and Nate — quiet, steady, perceptive in the way that men who have survived everything become perceptive — begins to see Will not as a guide but as a child who needed one. Will, who has been looking for his own missing father since before he joined the gang, begins to understand, with gathering horror, what he is walking this man toward.
