The wilderness here is dense and unforgiving — old forest, wide rivers, and a fur trade that has been pulling men deeper into dangerous country for a generation. A lone trapper drifts through this landscape in the way that certain men drift through the frontier: without fixed address, without apology, without any particular interest in other people's problems. He carries his name on his rifle and very little else. When he crosses the path of a young Shawnee woman named Spirit — caught in the crossfire of a rogue band and in immediate danger of not surviving the encounter — the drifter makes the pragmatic choice of a man who has seen enough of the frontier to know that walking past is also a decision. He saves her. He leaves. He finds his old friend Jeb Kline, a weathered trapper who operates out of a cabin in the tree line and asks no questions worth answering. It would have ended there, except that Spirit turns up again — sold to a fur trader named Tackett, a hard and pitiless man who has turned human suffering into a line item in his ledger, and she is trying to run. The drifter makes a second decision. Tackett does not accept it quietly, and behind Tackett is a landowner named Hickman — greedy, violent, and carrying enough local power to put a posse together before sundown.
