If Tianjin is a city where history and modernity can both be captured within a single frame, then the banks of the Haihe River are, without a doubt, the most evocative stretch for a leisurely stroll through the city’s past. Today, we find ourselves in the Hebei District of Tianjin, stepping into a neighborhood that exudes a distinct European charm while remaining deeply imprinted with the history of modern China: the Italian-Style District. Not far from Tianjin Railway Station, as you follow the course of the Haihe River, you will notice a remarkable transformation in the urban landscape. Red bricks, pale yellow walls, arched doorways, towers, balconies, and garden-style architecture come together to create a scene that feels quintessentially European. Yet, what truly makes this place compelling is more than just its "Italian" aesthetic; behind these beautiful structures lie over a hundred years of Tianjin’s modern urban evolution, as well as the enduring footprints of significant historical and cultural figures, such as Liang Qichao and Cao Yu. ⸻
