Against the backdrop of drought conditions across Maharashtra, this year’s Rabi season is facing a serious crisis. According to the Agriculture Department’s report, the state’s average area under Rabi crops stands at 5.78 million hectares. However, as of October 26, sowing had been completed on just 181,880 hectares — a mere 3.15 per cent of the average area. Adding to the crisis, Maharashtra recorded a staggering 95 per cent rainfall deficit in October. Particularly alarming is the fact that 12 districts received no rainfall at all during the entire month, recording a 100 per cent deficit. However, the situation has changed to some extent following Cyclone Arnab last week, with several parts of the state currently receiving varying amounts of rainfall. And now, just five days after Cyclone Arnab, another cyclone named Murasu has developed over the Bay of Bengal, raising the possibility of more rainfall in Maharashtra. Meanwhile, forecasts suggest the possibility of yet another, or a third, cyclone developing. Importantly, the India Meteorological Department has also forecast above-average rainfall in some parts of the country during November. So, how much longer will Maharashtra continue to receive rainfall? Which regions are likely to get rain? After the final phase of this year’s monsoon season also remained largely dry, will these weather developments bring relief to farmers across the state? And how exactly are these cyclones influencing rainfall in Maharashtra? These are the key questions we will explore in this video.
