ABOUT / DESCRIPTION JOHN 6 VERSES 41–51 KJV - PART 5 - I AM THE LIVING BREAD The people murmured because Jesus declared that He was the bread which came down from heaven. They knew Him as Jesus, the son of Joseph. They knew His earthly family, but they could not understand how He could say that He came down from heaven. Their questions brought forth one of the most powerful declarations Jesus made concerning everlasting life. In John 6:44, Jesus said: “No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.” Jesus revealed that no man can come to Him except the Father draws him. He spoke of those who hear and learn of the Father, and of the everlasting life that belongs to those who believe on Him. Then, in John 6:47–48, He declared: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. I am that bread of life.” Jesus reminded them that their fathers had eaten manna in the wilderness and had died. The manna had sustained them for a time, but Jesus was speaking of something far greater than earthly provision. He was speaking of everlasting life. In John 6:51, Jesus said: “I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” Here Jesus reveals that He is not only the Bread of Life, but the Living Bread who would give His flesh for the life of the world. The people were questioning where He came from. Jesus was revealing why He came. This passage calls our attention away from earthly understanding and toward the eternal life found in Jesus Christ.
