Spain's rail network has two important track gauges. Some trains can cross the boundary by changing the lateral position of their wheels in a specialised gauge-changing facility. We explain the difference between gauge and train width, why the train must be designed for the process, how support, unlocking, guidance and relocking work, and why changing gauge does not automatically solve signalling, power or capacity constraints. Mechanism animations are conceptual, not maintenance instructions. Map Motive explores how geography and engineering shape everyday life. Subscribe for more documentary explainers.
