I Explored an Appalachian River at Night During a Storm

I headed into an Appalachian mountain creek after dark to see what wildlife starts moving once the sun goes down. With nothing but a flashlight and the creek beside me, I searched the wet rocks, leaf litter, and stream edges for salamanders and anything else active at night. These cold mountain streams are home to an incredible variety of amphibians, and finding them in the dark is a completely different experience than exploring during the day. Eventually, I came across a salamander right along the creek — exactly the kind of animal I was hoping to find. This is my first nighttime wildlife search on the channel, but definitely not the last.
