🏥 Pavel left their village on a bus in March. "Two years," he said. "I promise you. Two years and I come home with enough."
For fourteen months he phoned every Sunday and sent money home. Then the phone calls stopped, and the agency said he was no longer on their list, and the police took a statement and never called back.
The village decided he had found another woman. Marta's mother told her to stop waiting. A good man asked her twice to marry him.
Instead, Marta left the village at twenty-seven, cleaned hospital corridors at night, studied at a night school, and qualified as a nurse at thirty-one.
And then, at two o'clock one morning in October, the ambulance brought in a man from a building site with no documents, a card in another man's name — and a white scar across the back of his left hand.
The Man With No Name is an English story for beginner and lower-intermediate learners (A2–B1). Clear sentences and very useful vocabulary about work, travel, hospitals, and family. A story about waiting, about shame, and about the two seconds in which a man decides to pretend he does not know you.
