A devastating aircraft crash near Kenge, the capital of Kwango Province, has claimed the lives of senior military justice officials, FARDC officers, other service members and civilians in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Let L-410 aircraft, registered as 9S-GUC, crashed on Friday, September 25, 2026, while reportedly returning from Kikwit toward Kinshasa. Witnesses said the aircraft appeared to be experiencing difficulties and circled above the area while apparently searching for a suitable place to make an emergency landing. The aircraft eventually came down in an unoccupied plot near Kenge and caught fire. Kwango’s acting provincial authorities reported that none of the 13 people listed on the preliminary flight manifest survived. The exact number and final identities of everyone aboard still require comprehensive official confirmation. Among the confirmed passengers were Lieutenant-General Joseph Mutombo Katalay Tiende, First President of the High Military Court, and Lieutenant-General Lucien-René Likulia Bakumi, Auditor General of the FARDC. They were travelling as part of an official mission on the Kinshasa–Kikwit–Kinshasa route. The deaths of these two senior officials represent a major loss for the DRC’s military justice system. One headed the country’s highest military court, while the other led the military prosecution service. Other officers, soldiers and civilians travelling with the delegation were also reported among the victims. An official mission document circulating after the crash contains more names than the preliminary number of people reported to have been aboard. This report therefore distinguishes between the delegation originally authorised to travel and the final passenger manifest, which authorities had not yet released in full. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Early witnesses and local officials referred to a possible technical emergency, but no competent aviation authority had established the final cause at the time this report was prepared.
