Been told to “roll through your feet” but unsure how to do it? This ballroom footwork lesson breaks down how your feet, knees and moving leg work together to create smoother forward and backward movement.
Rolling through your feet involves more than placing your heel or toe first. The timing between both feet matters as you move from one supporting leg to the next.
In this lesson, you’ll explore:
• Forward rolling through the heel, arch and toe.
• Backward rolling through the toe, arch and heel.
• How knee flexion coordinates with the swing of your moving leg.
• Brushing your foot underneath your body as you prepare the next step.
• The overlap between rolling off one foot and onto the other.
• The difference between simply picking up your feet and using a continuous rolling action.
• How speed affects the amount of pressure you use against the floor.
You’ll also try the image of “painting the floor” with your feet to explore brushing, floor contact and control.
Practise slowly first, paying attention to both feet rather than only the foot taking the next step.
Which feels harder to coordinate: rolling forward or rolling backward? Let us know in the comments.
