The Dark Story of Peiper's Men — the 84 Prisoners Who Never Left the Field

On December 17th, 1944, one day into the Battle of the Bulge, a column of American soldiers took a wrong road and drove straight into an SS panzer unit. They surrendered. They were herded into a field near a Belgian crossroads called Baugnez and cut down with machine guns — at least eighty-four men, unarmed, with their hands up. This is the story of the Malmedy massacre, of the 285th Field Artillery Observation Battalion, and of the reckoning that followed at Dachau, where forty-three men were sentenced to hang and not one of them ever did.
