Hello and Welcome to Deaf Talks News! You use shampoo every single day. But do you know where shampoo was actually invented from? It was made in India first. Let us tell you this fascinating true story. First the word Shampoo entered the English language in 1762. It comes directly from the Hindi word Champo. Meaning to press, knead or massage. Now the story goes back even further. Ancient Indians used soap called Reetha combined with Amla, Shikakai and other Ayurvedic herbs to clean their hair. These natural ingredients lathered naturally and cleaned the hair beautifully. In the 1500s Indians were regularly massaging their heads. In the 1700s British traders and colonisers came to India. They discovered the Indian tradition of head massage and herbal hair cleansing. They were fascinated by how healthy and shiny Indian hair was. They brought this practice back to Britain. The Indian man named Sake Dean Mahomed. He was a Bengali traveller, surgeon and entrepreneur. In 1814, Sake Dean Mahomed and his Irish wife Jane Daly opened the first ever commercial shampooing bath in Brighton, England. He offered Indian medicated vapour baths combined with traditional Indian head massage using herbal oils. His became so popular that King George and King William both appointed him as their personal Shampooing Surgeon. What happened next? The idea spread across Europe. In 1900 a German chemist created the first liquid soap based shampoo and named it Champooing directly from the Indian word. From there everywhere started using and India gave the world Shampoo.
