“Call Me a Witch” by RABENFELS is dark medieval rock about fear, accusation and persecution.
DEUTSCHER LIEDTEXT
Am Rand des Dorfs, beim schwarzen Hain,
stand ihre Hütte, Holz und Stein.
Sie kannte Wurzel, Blatt und Kraut
und wusste, was man daraus braut.
Wer fiebernd vor die Schwelle trat,
fand bei ihr Kräuter, Trost und Rat.
Doch Wissen, das nicht jeder kennt,
wird leicht zur Schuld, wenn Furcht entbrennt.
REFRAIN
Nennt mich Hexe, wenn ihr wollt,
wenn euch Furcht die Zunge führt.
Ich kenn Kräuter, Wind und Wunden –
doch kein Fluch hat euch berührt.
Nennt mich Hexe, sprecht mein Urteil,
wenn euch Wahrheit nicht genügt.
Wer heut nach Strick und Feuer ruft,
weiß nicht, was im Dunkel liegt.
Dann starb ein Kind in jener Nacht,
kein Kraut, kein Trank hat Heil gebracht.
Die Gerste faulte, Vieh verendet –
und bald war ihre Schuld benannt.
Ein Wort gab rasch das nächste her,
aus Argwohn wurde täglich mehr.
Was niemand wusste, galt als wahr –
weil eine Schuldige schon da war.
Refrain: siehe oben
LETZTER REFRAIN
Nennt mich Hexe, wenn ihr wollt,
wenn euch Furcht die Zunge führt.
Ich kenn Kräuter, Wind und Wunden –
doch kein Fluch hat euch berührt.
Nennt mich Hexe, sprecht mein Urteil,
wenn euch Wahrheit nicht genügt.
Ihr kamt mit Strick und Feuer her –
doch keiner weiß, wohin ich ging.
Sie suchten Wald und Bach und Flur.
Kein Schritt.
Kein Zeichen.
Keine Spur.
Die Tür war zu.
Der Herd noch warm.
Und niemand sah sie je wieder.
ENGLISH LYRICS
At the village edge, beside the blackened grove,
stood her little house of wood and stone.
She knew every root, leaf and herb
and what could be brewed from them.
Those who came fevered to her door
found herbs, comfort and advice.
But knowledge few can understand
becomes guilt when fear takes hold.
CHORUS
Call me a witch if you wish,
if fear is guiding your tongue.
I know herbs, winds and wounds –
but no curse has touched you.
Call me a witch, pass your judgment,
if the truth is not enough.
Whoever calls for rope and fire
does not know what waits in the dark.
Then a child died in the night.
No herb or drink could bring a cure.
The barley rotted, cattle died –
and soon her guilt had been declared.
One whisper quickly followed another.
Suspicion grew from day to day.
What no one knew was treated as truth,
because they already had someone to blame.
Chorus: see above
They came before the morning light
with ropes and torches, judgment and death.
The path to the grove lay cold and empty;
not a bird called in the dark.
They shouted her name.
No answer came from the house.
They broke the bolt
and stopped upon the threshold.
A final glow remained in the hearth.
The cup upon the table was warm.
Her cloak still hung upon the wall.
But outside:
no footprint in the sand.
FINAL CHORUS
Call me a witch if you wish,
if fear is guiding your tongue.
I know herbs, winds and wounds –
but no curse has touched you.
Call me a witch, pass your judgment,
if the truth is not enough.
You came with rope and fire –
but no one knows where I went.
They searched the woods, the stream and fields.
No step.
No sign.
No trace.
The door was closed.
The hearth still warm.
And no one ever saw her again.
