Have you ever been disappointed by someone and immediately thought, “But I would NEVER have done that to them”? ❤️ If you’ve ever wondered why the people you love don’t always show up, communicate, or react the way you would, pull up a chair.
In today’s video, I Had to Stop Expecting Me From Other People, I’m talking about an uncomfortable realization I’ve had about relationships: sometimes I expect other people to think, respond, and show love exactly the way I do.
I would have called. I would have remembered. I would have shown up. I would have handled it differently.
But then it occurred to me—I may have been carrying around an invisible rulebook for relationships that nobody else even knew existed. 😂 I was giving people a test they didn’t know they were taking.
And here’s where it gets especially uncomfortable: I’m certainly not perfect at relationships either. I can care deeply about someone and still forget to call, put off sending that text, or be terrible about birthday cards. So maybe someone showing love differently than I do doesn’t automatically mean they don’t care.
That doesn’t mean accepting hurtful behavior or ignoring unhealthy patterns. It simply means learning the difference between someone treating us badly and someone responding differently than we would.
Here at Coffee, Chaos and Grace, we have honest conversations about relationships, personal growth, starting over, and all the things we’re still figuring out. I’m a 63-year-old teacher, mom of six (four adopted), divorced, and navigating autoimmune disease, weight struggles, and plenty of unexpected chapters along the way.
If you’ve ever caught yourself thinking, “But I would have…”, I’d love to hear your story. Like this video, subscribe to Coffee, Chaos and Grace, and tell me in the comments: Have you ever realized you were expecting someone else to love or respond exactly the way you would?
Maybe the people in our lives aren’t always lacking love. Maybe sometimes we just need to learn how to recognize the different ways love shows up. ☕
There’s always room for one more at our coffee table.
