In February 1974, 25-year-old artist Mary Schlais left her Minneapolis apartment to hitchhike to an art show in Chicago. Hours later, she was found dead in the snow on a rural road in Dunn County, Wisconsin.
Investigators had a witness, a sketch, and one piece of evidence left at the scene: a stocking cap that didn't belong to her. But they had no name. For 50 years, the case stayed open.
Then genetic genealogy changed everything.
The man investigators finally identified had been living quietly in Minnesota for decades. When they came to his door, he was 84 years old, and he knew exactly why they were there.
In this video, we follow the case from the day Mary left home, through 50 years of dead ends and a famous false lead, to the breakthrough, the confession, and the sentencing. And we remember who Mary was beyond the case file.
If you follow cold cases, true crime investigations, and murders finally solved after decades, subscribe to Case Left Cold.
