A former State Crime Lab analyst walks the jury through the 2018 DNA. His profile comes off his nails, boxers, earbuds and a charger cord. Asked on cross if Paitin Fields' DNA was on any item: "Not on anything that I was able to interpret, no." Paitin Fields was five in November 2017, when she was rushed to the emergency room in Burgaw, North Carolina. Her uncle, David Prevatte, was named a suspect in 2018 and not charged until 2022. The uncle on trial is charged in her death and with other charges, and he is presumed innocent. The State gave notice on Feb. 9 that it will not seek the death penalty, StarNews reported. This is the second block of court on Day 6. Kristin Meyer tested the evidence in two reports in 2018. A plastic nozzle and his nail scrapings carried one profile, his, at about 1 in 814 octillion. On a swab taken from him, the major profile was unknown in January 2018 and later matched Haley Fawcett. A hot glue gun cord held at least four people, and its major profile matched none of the samples she had: "That I had received, no." Whose is it? This Part does not say. On redirect, the parts she could not read "could be contributors or they could have been excluded." Then Shane Wilcox of the State Crime Lab: the same base process, better technology, and mixture software "that was not used initially with this case." --- WATCH WITH JUSTICE 0:00:00 What this video is, and a preview 0:00:18 Intro 0:01:18 to 0:10:42 - Video starts: The jury returns and the State calls Kristin Meyer, a State Crime Lab DNA analyst for 14 or 15 years. DNA in plain words: "a genetic blueprint," half from each parent. 0:10:42 to 0:21:58 - Her first report: Paitin's swabs, hands and foot, a plastic nozzle, his nail scrapings, a swab taken from him, and cheek swabs from David Prevatte and Dale Hunt. 0:21:58 to 0:27:56 - Looking for male DNA on Paitin's swabs and hands. Four show a possible trace, too little to test: "I can't definitively say that there's male DNA." 0:27:56 to 0:32:37 - The nozzle and his nail scrapings: one profile, his, about 1 in 814 octillion. Dale Hunt and Paitin are excluded. Has lab technology advanced since? "I am sure that is true." 0:32:37 to 0:38:18 - A swab taken from him: a mixture of three, and in January 2018 the major profile is "from an unknown contributor." 0:38:18 to 0:45:13 - Her second report, April 2018: boxer shorts cuttings, red earbuds, phone and vacuum cords, Christmas lights, a hot glue gun cord, and four new reference swabs. 0:45:13 to 0:49:31 - Compared again: the nozzle and nails still match only him. On the swab taken from him, the major profile now matches Haley Fawcett. 0:49:31 to 1:00:18 - The boxer shorts, a charger cord and the red earbuds: the major profile is his, with Paitin and the rest excluded. Five other items are inconclusive. 1:00:18 to 1:04:10 - The hot glue gun cord: at least four people, the major profile unknown. Did it match anyone? "That I had received, no." 1:04:10 to 1:06:15 - Cross: was Paitin's DNA on any item? "Not on anything that I was able to interpret, no." 1:06:15 to 1:09:13 - Redirect: the parts she could not read "could be contributors or they could have been excluded." 1:09:13 to 1:24:15 - Shane Wilcox of the State Crime Lab is sworn: the same base process, new mixture software, STRmix where she used ArmedXpert. Then lunch. CASE BACKGROUND REPORT: https://justiceisaprocess.com/nc-v-da... Complete case overview including the charges, the timeline, the key players, and the legal questions this trial raises.
