Breast Cancer Awareness Month starts here. Radiologist Dr. Don Goodwin has been reading images for more than 50 years, and he joins Dr. Dave Kashuba and Mike McGann to explain when to start screening, what a mammogram can miss, and what to do about it.
"Our job is to find it as small and early as possible, because the smaller the lesion, the earlier the stage, the better the prognosis."
In this episode:
• Age 40 or 50, every year or every other year, and why the guidelines disagree
• Dense breasts: a mammogram can miss up to 60% of cancers under 10mm
• Ultrasound and breast MRI: in one study of BRCA positive women, mammography found 15 cancers per thousand, ultrasound 7 more, MRI 42
• How much radiation a 3D mammogram really carries (about one cross country flight)
• Why callbacks have dropped from 10 to 12% to around 6 to 8%
• Core needle biopsy and the end of most "cut it out and see" surgery
• Stage 1 five year survival of about 98 to 99%
• Men get breast cancer too, roughly 1 in 1,000
• What the research says, and keeps changing its mind about, on hormone replacement therapy
Dr. Don Goodwin practices with TGH Imaging, formerly Palm Beach Radiology: 561-841-8588
