What is “the glory that remains”? In 2 Corinthians 3:9–12, the apostle Paul explains why the glory of the new covenant through Jesus Christ surpasses the glory associated with the covenant given through Moses. The Law was holy, wise, and God-given. It revealed God’s righteous standard and exposed the reality of human sin, but it could not remove sin from the heart or give people the power to live in righteousness. Like a mirror that shows dirt but cannot wash it away, the Law revealed our need for a Saviour. Through Jesus Christ, God has established a better and lasting covenant—a ministry of righteousness. Through faith in Christ, believers receive forgiveness, a new standing before God, inner transformation, access to the Father, and the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit. The gospel does not merely tell us that we are sinners; it declares that, in Christ, we can be forgiven, made new, and empowered to live differently. The glory connected with Moses and the giving of the Law was real, but it was preparatory. It pointed forward to the greater glory found in Christ. The old covenant revealed the need; the new covenant reveals the Answer. What was passing away pointed to what remains: the permanent work of Jesus, the righteousness received by faith, the transforming work of the Spirit, and the hope believers have in God. Because this hope remains, we can speak with great boldness—not with arrogance or religious superiority, but with confidence in the gospel. Through Jesus, we do not have to approach God in fear, wondering whether we have done enough to earn His acceptance. With reverence, humility, and confidence, we come to the Father because our access rests on Christ’s righteousness, not our own perfection.
