The V-22 Osprey: How This Unusual Aircraft Flies Like Both a Helicopter and an Airplane
The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey is one of the most unusual military aircraft ever built. Combining the vertical takeoff and landing capabilities of a helicopter with the speed and range of an airplane, it introduced a completely different approach to military transport.
But making this concept work was far from simple. After its first flight in 1989, the Osprey faced decades of development challenges, technical problems, and fatal accidents before entering operational service in 2007.
In this documentary, we take a closer look at the MV-22B Osprey, the U.S. Marine Corps transport variant. Discover how its unique tiltrotor system works, how its engines rotate to transition between helicopter and airplane flight, and how its folding mechanism allows the aircraft to fit aboard ships.
We also explore why the Marines needed an aircraft capable of flying faster and farther than a conventional helicopter, how the Osprey has been used in military operations and rescue missions, and the safety challenges that have shaped its history.
From its ambitious design to its complex engineering and operational record, the V-22 Osprey shows just how difficult it can be to turn an extraordinary aviation concept into a working aircraft.
