Nanih Waiya is the Mother Mound of the Choctaw — and two very different origin traditions meet there. In one version, the Choctaw emerge from a cave at Nanih Waiya into the upper world. In another, the people migrate from the west, guided by a sacred pole, until they reach Nanih Waiya and the journey ends. The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians preserves both traditions today. This episode follows the mound, the cave, early written accounts, archaeology, removal under the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek, and the return of the mound to Choctaw control in 2008. The question is not which story can be reduced to a modern map. It is why two different origins converge on the same sacred place. Sources: 1.
