A father, a son, three days of silence and one question on the mountain: where is the lamb?
"Some time later God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am," he answered." (Genesis 22:1, BSB)
The LORD Will Provide walks through Genesis 22 in order. God calls Abraham to take his only son Isaac to the land of Moriah. They rise early, split the wood, and travel three days. Isaac carries the wood, Abraham carries the fire and the knife, and the two of them walk on together.
"The fire and the wood are here," said Isaac, "but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?" (Genesis 22:7, BSB)
"Abraham answered, "God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son."" (Genesis 22:8, BSB)
At the altar the angel of the LORD calls from heaven, "Do not lay a hand on the boy" (Genesis 22:12, BSB). Abraham looks up and sees "a ram in a thicket, caught by its horns" (Genesis 22:13, BSB), and offers it in place of his son.
"And Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. So to this day it is said, "On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided."" (Genesis 22:14, BSB)
Hebrews tells us what Abraham carried up that climb: "Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead" (Hebrews 11:19, BSB). On Moriah God stopped the knife. For His own Son He did not: "He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also, along with Him, freely give us all things?" (Romans 8:32, BSB). And the question Isaac asked is answered at the Jordan: "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29, BSB)
