I want to introduce you to a book that maybe you've never heard of, and if you have heard of it, maybe you misunderstood it. It's called the Tao Te Ching.
When we hear ancient Chinese text in the West, we usually assume it's a religious book, or a collection of mystical riddles, or maybe some fortune cookie saying. But the Tao Te Ching is none of those things.
It's a book of 81 short philosophical sayings, written over 2,500 years ago by a man named Lao Tzu. And it is a masterclass in the daily practice of surrender.
The word Tao simply means "the way." It is the underlying order of the universe. In Chapter 1 of this workbook, we talked about the quantum field. The Tao is just the ancient Chinese name for exactly the same reality.
In this teaching, Joseph Farley shares Chapter 7 of the Creative Mind Workbook with Section 7.6 — The Way.
You'll learn:
• The true meaning of the Tao Te Ching
• The ancient principle of Wu Wei — effortless action
• The story of the hunchback who caught cicadas with ease
• How the Tao and the Bible say the exact same thing
• Why "abiding" is the ultimate daily practice
• The science of Flow (Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi)
• The story of Cook Ding and the ox
• Why the softest thing overcomes the hardest thing
• The 4-step daily Wu Wei practice: Still, Drop, Find the Joint, Abide
Lao Tzu taught that you don't have to force life to happen. You don't have to grind, manipulate, and push. You simply have to align with the way, and the way will do the rest.
This is the ancient principle of Wu Wei. It means effortless action. It's not lazy, and it's not sitting around doing nothing. It's the art of taking action that is perfectly aligned with the universe, rather than fighting against it.
Lao Tzu wrote, "The softest thing in the world overcomes the hardest things in the world." You don't break through the walls of your limited belief; you flow around them.
So let me ask you something. Where in your life have you been forcing instead of flowing? Where are you trying to push the river instead of riding it?
The daily practice of the Tao is not about adding more to your schedule. It's about dropping more.
Every morning, you drop the need to control. Every evening, you drop the resistance of the day. You empty yourself. And when you're empty, the universe can finally fill you.
Stop pushing the river, and start riding it.
