Howard Hughes's Last Ten Years Were Much STRANGER Than America Was Told Officially, Howard Hughes died of kidney failure on April 5, 1976, on a private jet somewhere between Acapulco and Houston. But the man on that stretcher weighed about ninety pounds, and the FBI had to compare his fingerprints before anyone would say for certain who he was. In 1938 New York threw him a ticker-tape parade for flying around the world in ninety-one hours. By 1966 he was carried on a stretcher into a service elevator at the Desert Inn in Las Vegas, and he did not come out for four years. He bought the hotel instead. The windows were taped shut. His orders went out on yellow legal pads, carried by a small circle of aides. His own business chief later said they never once met face to face. When he died, no will was found that any court would accept. Three weeks later, a sealed envelope turned up on a desk in Salt Lake City.
