What does it really mean to be holy? For many people, holiness sounds like religious severity—a life defined by rules, restriction, and moral superiority. Even Christians may reduce it to avoiding certain sins and maintaining respectable behavior. But 1 Peter 1:13–17 presents something far deeper and more personal. This Gospel-centered message explains that holiness begins with belonging. In the biblical world, something became holy when it was set apart entirely for God. That means a holy life is not simply a morally improved life. It is a life that no longer treats itself as its own possession. You will discover why people can behave morally while still living entirely for themselves, how holiness transforms ordinary areas such as work, money, time, relationships, sexuality, ambition, and rest, and why Christian obedience is different from fearful religious compliance. Peter calls believers “obedient children.” Christians do not obey in order to persuade God to become their Father. They obey because, through Jesus Christ, they have already been brought into His family. Grace becomes the foundation of holiness rather than its reward. This sermon also explores why holiness requires the whole person: an alert mind that thinks through the implications of Christian hope, a surrendered will that obeys even when desire resists, and a heart filled with awe at the precious blood of Christ. Most importantly, the message points to Jesus, who said that He sanctified Himself for His people. Christ gave Himself completely—enduring suffering, judgment, and death—so that those who trust Him could be redeemed from the exhausting captivity of living only for themselves. Holiness is therefore not the destruction of freedom. It is freedom from making the self the center of every decision, relationship, disappointment, and achievement. This is an original Gospel-centered reflection developed from themes associated with Tim Keller’s biblical teaching and is not an official Tim Keller sermon or production.
