Zwischen Mühlrad und den Zinnen | Rabenfelds
Ein Müllerssohn verliebt sich in Adelheid, die Tochter des Herrn von Rabenfels. Doch Herkunft und Stand machen ihre Liebe unmöglich.
A miller’s son falls in love with Adelheid, the daughter of the lord of Rabenfels. But birth and rank keep their worlds apart.
Deutscher Liedtext
Am Bach vor Rabenfels im Tal,
da dreht sich unser Rad.
Mein Vater mahlt seit Jahr und Tag,
was Feld und Ähren gab.
Und manchen Morgen trug ich Mehl
hinauf durchs Burgtor schwer.
Refrain
Zwischen Mühlrad und den Zinnen
liegt mehr als Stein und Land.
Ich darf dich sehen, darf dich lieben,
doch niemals deine Hand.
So nah gehst du an mir vorüber,
Kein Schwur zerbricht, was Herkunft band,
kein Müller fasst des Herren Hand.
Refrain: siehe oben
Dann kam im Herbst ein fremdes Ross
mit silbernem Geschirr.
Ein junger Herr von hohem Haus
stieg vor dem Tore nieder.
Kein Mensch im Tal hat mich gefragt,
doch jeder wusste bald:
Im Winter wird auf Rabenfels
für Adelheid gemahlt.
Am Hochzeitstag trug ich das Mehl
ein letztes Mal hinauf.
Die Glocken klangen überm Tal,
die Tore standen auf.
Sie ging an ihres Vaters Arm,
ein Kranz lag in ihrem Haar.
Für einen Atemzug sah sie mich –
als ob da etwas war.
Ich senkte still mein Haupt vor ihr
und ging den Berg hinab.
Das Mühlrad drehte sich wie stets,
als wär kein Herz begraben.
Letzter Refrain
Zwischen Mühlrad und den Zinnen
liegt mehr als Stein und Land.
Ich durfte sehen, durfte lieben,
doch niemals deine Hand.
Und läuten droben ihre Glocken,
rauscht unten noch der Bach.
Manch Liebe stirbt nicht an der Ferne –
nur daran, was Geburt aus uns gemacht.
Das Rad geht um.
Der Bach zieht fort.
Doch manches Herz
bleibt ewig dort.
English Lyrics
By the stream below Rabenfels,
our mill wheel turns around.
My father has been grinding grain
from fields and harvests year by year.
And many mornings I carried flour
up through the castle gate.
There I saw her by the linden tree –
and after that saw nothing else.
Adelheid, the lord’s own child,
in a bright dress made of linen,
spoke a word to the old servant
and smiled there in the sunlight.
I stood with dust on hands and clothes,
she born so high – and I so far below.
Chorus
Between the mill wheel and the battlements
lies more than stone and land.
I may see you, I may love you,
but never hold your hand.
So close you pass before me,
yet you are far from me.
What use is a heart that calls for you
when my world cannot reach yours?
From then on I carried every sack
that was destined for the keep.
Soon I knew the sound of the gate,
the courtyard, even the linden tree.
At times she stood upon the stairs
while I carried up the loads.
Once her eyes met mine –
one moment was enough for me.
She greeted me softly, I bowed my head;
my station allowed no more than that.
For between her coat of arms above
and my mill stood the law of rank.
No vow can break what birth has bound,
no miller takes a lord’s daughter’s hand.
Chorus: see above
Then in autumn came a foreign steed
with harness made of silver.
A young lord from a noble house
dismounted at the gate.
No one in the valley asked me,
yet soon enough we knew:
this winter up at Rabenfels
they would prepare for Adelheid.
On her wedding day I carried flour
up the hill one final time.
The bells were ringing through the valley,
the castle gates stood wide.
She walked upon her father’s arm,
a wreath lay in her hair.
For one brief breath she looked at me –
as though something lingered there.
I quietly bowed my head to her
and walked back down the hill.
The mill wheel turned just as before,
as though no heart had been buried.
Final Chorus
Between the mill wheel and the battlements
lies more than stone and land.
I was allowed to see, allowed to love,
but never hold your hand.
And while her bells ring high above,
the stream still rushes down below.
Some love does not die from distance –
but from what birth has made of us.
The wheel turns on.
The stream flows away.
Yet some hearts
remain there forever.
