She tells the detective she'll take a polygraph without blinking. Six days earlier, in the same chair, she walked a Jonesboro, Arkansas detective through the most ordinary afternoon of her life: lunch with her husband, a stop for her diabetic father, a text that went unanswered. Hours later her husband, Marc Despain, was shot dead in their kitchen. What Michelle Despain doesn't know, sitting back in that same room, is that two men are already in custody, and both of them say they talked to her father.
This is the real two-session interrogation tape, built around a "CLAIM vs THE RECORD" structure: every claim Michelle makes on camera is checked, one by one, against what investigators actually knew. Original narration, analysis graphics and a running contradiction counter sit on top of the primary-source footage.
Michelle Despain was charged with capital murder; that charge was dropped. In 2014 she pleaded guilty to three counts of hindering apprehension or prosecution and was sentenced to 30 years. She was paroled in 2019.
Sources: Michelle Despain police interrogation (sessions of Aug 25 and Aug 31, 2011); Carl Kelley police interrogation (Aug 24, 2011); text-message evidence as reported by KAIT8 court coverage.
