I took a walk along Waiyaki Way and Chiromo Lane near The Mirage and Global Trade Centre (GTC) Tower to check out the latest progress on the stormwater drainage works.
Most of the drainage construction along this section appears to be nearing completion, with stormwater covers already installed in several areas. I also stopped for a few minutes to watch a truck equipped with a crane being loaded with the concrete stormwater cover blocks before they were transported to the work areas.
A few metres away, near the entrance to Villa Rosa Kempinski, I came across another interesting part of the construction. A rock breaker was being used to excavate extremely hard rock underneath a section beside the main road. The machine was powerful enough to shake the ground as it broke through the rock.
Traffic was also being controlled by a traffic police officer while the excavation was taking place. A digging tractor was collecting the broken rock and loading it onto a tipper truck.
Nearby, workers were laying and tying reinforcement bars as they prepared the next section of the drainage works. A generator was also being used to assist with the metalwork.
Further ahead, several sections already had their stormwater covers installed, showing that much of the work along this stretch has already been completed.
At this stage, the remaining work appears to mainly involve connecting and completing the drainage system through the section where the hard rock is being excavated.
Join me as I walk through the area and take a closer look at the ongoing works around Waiyaki Way and Chiromo Lane.
