Newbiggin-by-the-Sea Walk: Town Centre & Beach【4K】

Located in the county of Northumberland, and around 15 miles north, and slightly east, of Newcastle upon Tyne, is the town of Newbiggin-by-the-Sea (or Newbiggin for short). Geographically, Newbiggin is situated around a south-facing bay on the North Sea. During the medieval era it was said to have been the third largest port in England for shipping grain behind Hull and London. At the edge of the bay is the Parish Church of St Bartholomew. This dates from the 13th century with some 19th century restoration. Its tower and spire once served as a navigational beacon for passing ships. The church is Grade I listed. In 1872 a railway station opened in Newbiggin courtesy of the Blyth and Tyne Railway. This was one of the northern termini of a line that connected to Newcastle upon Tyne and North Shields. The station closed in 1964 as part of the Beeching cuts, along with over 2,000 other stations across Britain in order, supposedly, to encourage road travel. Today, public transport to Newbiggin consists of direct buses from Newcastle upon Tyne, Bedlington, Ashington, Morpeth and various other nearby locations. In 2007 the sculpture known as Couple (also known as Ebb & Flo) by artist Sean Henry was unveiled on the breakwater at Newbiggin Bay. Seen just after the 6-and-a-half minute mark, these two figures stand around 5 metres (16 feet) tall in what became the UK’s first permanent offshore public sculpture.
