Most people picture Canada as a young country spread across an empty wilderness. But that picture has the timeline backwards. Across Canada, the ground keeps opening onto older and older worlds: mammoths frozen in Yukon permafrost, a 45-million-year-old forest in the Arctic, a fish that was learning to walk, soft-bodied sea creatures high in the Rockies, some of the earliest complex life on a Newfoundland cliff, rock from the early Earth, and water sealed underground for around two billion years. So why does one country expose so much of Earth's deep past? The answer starts with ice that erased almost everything on the surface, and in doing so, uncovered what lay beneath. In this video: 🧊 The Laurentide Ice Sheet and the land that's still rising 🌊 Glacial Lake Agassiz, the vanished lake that may have cooled the world 🏝️ The drowned coastal landscape off Haida Gwaii 🦣 Beringia: Yukon's ice-free world of mammoths and a 50,000-year-old wolf pup 🌲 The Axel Heiberg fossil forest 🐟 Tiktaalik, the fish with a neck and wrists 🦐 The Burgess Shale's strange Cambrian creatures 🌿 Mistaken Point's 565-million-year-old fronds ☄️ The Sudbury impact structure 🪨 Acasta Gneiss and Nuvvuagittuq, among Earth's oldest rocks 💧 Kidd Creek's two-billion-year-old water Which country or region should I explore next?
