On the west coast of Newfoundland, there's a mountain that looks like the surface of Mars. The rock beneath your feet didn't form in the Earth's crust at all. It came from the mantle. So how did a piece of the Earth's interior end up on a Canadian mountaintop? Why does one island seem to be made from two different continents? And what happened to the ocean that used to be here? In this video, we uncover the ancient secret hidden beneath Canada's Appalachian Mountains: the lost Iapetus Ocean, the drifting microcontinent Avalonia, and the collisions that built a mountain range. We explore the Tablelands in Gros Morne National Park, the Red Indian Line that splits Newfoundland in two, the trilobite clue that led J. Tuzo Wilson to the Wilson Cycle, the 565-million-year-old fossils of Mistaken Point, and the fossil sites of Miguasha and Joggins. We also see how the opening of the Atlantic scattered these mountains across two continents. 💬 Have you hiked in Newfoundland, Cape Breton or the Gaspé without realizing you were walking across the seam of a lost ocean? Let me know in the comments. 👍 If you enjoyed this, like and subscribe for more stories about places far older and stranger than they look. #Canada #Geology #Newfoundland
