This sermon walks through John's account of Jesus' burial and the empty tomb, and asks what the resurrection of Jesus means. It looks at the historical details John includes: Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, the new tomb, the 75 pounds of spices, the sealing stone, and the neatly folded grave clothes. Together they show that Jesus truly died and truly rose, with no mistake and no stolen body.
The sermon also looks at Mary Magdalene, a forgiven sinner and a woman, who was the first to see the risen Lord. It shows how God delights in overturning expectations. The resurrection proves that Christ completed the work of the cross, and that our faith is not in vain. The listener is asked to trust that Jesus' work is finished and to be bold in telling others, as Mary did.
