On the night of December 30-31, 2000, four members of the Miyazawa family were killed in their home in Setagaya, Tokyo. The killer stayed in the house for hours, ate ice cream, used the family computer — and left behind his fingerprints, his DNA, his clothes and his blood. Almost 26 years later, police still do not know his name.
In this video:
• The family and the house in Kamisoshigaya, Setagaya Ward, beside Soshigaya Park
• What the killer left behind: fingerprints, DNA (blood type A), a hip bag, clothes, shoes and footprints
• The clues that went cold: a shirt of which only ~130 were made (12 buyers traced), South Korean-made Slazenger shoes not sold in Japan, and sand reportedly traced to California and a Japanese skate park
• The DNA puzzle: maternal markers pointing to southern Europe / the eastern Mediterranean, paternal markers to East Asia
• Why no match: fingerprints in no searchable database, a disputed computer-log timestamp, and a case that is still active, with a police reward of up to ¥20 million
This is a REAL, unsolved case, told calmly and without graphic detail. No living person is accused of anything in this video. Contested points (the sand origin, the computer log, the exact age range) are flagged as contested in the script.
New files every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday: unsolved cases, disappearances and dark history from Japan.
