How do you qualify for the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona while averaging less than eight hours of recorded training per week?
In this video, Enduraprep endurance coach Lawrence Cronk breaks down how Ben Smith qualified for Kona at IRONMAN Wales 2026, finishing 8th out of 263 athletes in the M40-44 age group in 11:09:55.
Ben wasn't actually targeting Kona. His goal was to break 11 hours at Wales, while balancing training with running a business, family commitments and a history of knee problems.
Having coached Ben on and off since 2018, I take you through his actual TrainingPeaks data and explain how we structured his preparation around the time he had available.
In this video:
• The training structure behind his Kona qualification
• Why we prioritised bike fitness and managed running carefully
• Sweet spot, threshold and VO2max training progression
• Mallorca cycling camp and Swansea 70.3
• The real training numbers: 284 hours and an average of 7h 41m per week
• Bike execution at IRONMAN Wales: 234W normalised power and 1.11 variability index
• Indoor versus outdoor FTP and why it matters
• Marathon pacing and the demands of the Wales course
• Why I believe in training with data and racing on feel
• Four key lessons for long-course triathletes
