Enyang Ancient Town in Bazhong, Sichuan, boasts a long and storied history; Enyang County was established here as early as 1,500 years ago. Situated on the west bank of the Enyang River, the town features tiers of tiled roofs that stretch along the riverside—a scene both rustic and serene.
Rather than entering through the main gate, I chose to stroll in via a small path at the town’s southernmost edge. The atmosphere here is a world apart from the bustling main street, imbued instead with a rich, authentic sense of daily life. Small, traditional shops line the street, one after another; local women carrying vegetable baskets hurry past, while the clatter of mahjong tiles echoes through the lanes—a sound that seems to have resonated here for centuries. The storefronts along Huilong Street, weathered by time and the elements for over a hundred years, exude a sense of history, with the gentle, lived-in warmth of everyday life permeating the alleyways.
The heart of the ancient town is even more compelling. Over a dozen old streets remain much as they were in the past, with undulating stone-paved paths that lend the area a soft, graceful beauty. Local families still reside in these historic dwellings; tourists and residents cross paths in the narrow lanes, coexisting in quiet harmony. This is a truly vibrant, living town—a place where human life has flourished continuously for 1,500 years.
Here, one finds both lively thoroughfares and secluded, quiet alleys. For 1,500 years, the Enyang River has flowed on, its waters bearing witness to the tales of the ancient Micang Trail and the simple, rhythmic lives of the people who have called this place home. The town makes no deliberate effort to cater to tourists; it simply preserves the enduring, generational pulse of daily existence. Here, time rests upon the blue-stone slabs—slow, steady, and lingering.
