Grows 3 Crops at Once: The Intercropping Planting System

🌽 Right now, most gardens are wasting two-thirds of their space. Every bed planted with a single crop could be growing three — with bare soil sitting between the plants, growing nothing but weeds. Our grandparents grew two or three crops in the same ground at once. It's called intercropping. Here's how to grow three crops in the space of one. 🌽🫘🎃 *The Three Sisters* — corn, beans, and squash. The corn is a pole for the beans, the beans feed the soil with nitrogen, the squash shades out weeds. Three crops from one mound. 🥬 *Lettuce between brassicas* — sow fast lettuce in the gaps between slow cabbages. You harvest the salad a month before the cabbages need the room. 🥕 *Radishes with carrots* — mix radish seed into your carrot row. They mark the row, and pulling them loosens the soil for straighter carrots. 🍓 *Onions among strawberries* — the onions repel pests off the berries, and you get two crops from one bed. 🍅 *Tomatoes with basil & marigolds* — the basil and marigolds drive off pests, the tomato shades the basil.
