I spent most of my whole life feeling that I don't fit in. Culturally I was different than my peers. I lived in a big college American football town, but I wasn't really into watching sports. Instead, I enjoyed the arts and music, which would have been considered very feminine. I was picked on throughout high school for dressing different and was called names of things that I wasn't.
As I began to travel the feeling became even more apparent to me and it became my mission to try to find a place that I could call home. Vacations no longer became for enjoyment, but to visit locations that might be a good place to live. I began to slowly develop an internal checklist of what the perfect place should be: safe, conservative in culture, great healthcare, easy travel, good food, etc. and am now living in a place just like that, but yet I feel even more alone than I ever have before. I'm just the outsider looking in to the world that is around me.
For the music I knew right away that I wanted it to be a rustic indie folk song, with the feeling of someone just walking a dusty with their acoustic guitar strapped across their back.
----------
[Verse 1]
I’ve walked the highways, dust in my shoes,
Sat by rivers that never called my name.
Every town felt borrowed, every face a passing glance,
I was always the outsider, never claimed.
[Chorus]
I’m a man without a country,
I’ve got no place to call home.
I’m a man without a country,
Forever drifting, forever alone.
[Verse 2]
I’ve heard the laughter in taverns at night,
But the warmth never reached my bones.
I’ve searched for love in the glow of lantern light,
But I found only shadows, only stones.
[Chorus]
I’m a man without a country,
I’ve got no place to call home.
I’m a man without a country,
Forever drifting, forever alone.
[Bridge]
Underappreciated, misunderstood,
I carry my exile like a song.
If no land will claim me,
Then I’ll be a country all of my own.
[Final Chorus]
I’m a man without a country,
But I’ve built my kingdom inside.
I’m a man without a country,
And my soul is where I reside.
