November 8th, 1942 - With the guns and bunkers of Fedala silenced, the men of the 3rd Infantry begin their push towards a small Axis airfield. Their goal - prevent enemy air support from harrassing the Torch landings, and secure the strip for future Allied use. Intelligence reports also indicate that a German colonel was visiting the Vichy French installations in the area when the American invasion of Morocco began, and is now attempting to flee with his unit aboard a Condor plane. Sgt. Bradocks's squad has been ordered to stop it and its fighter escort from taking off by any means necessary. Welcome to Part 18! We're back to using the graphics mod, I'm thinking the texture glitches in Fedala 1 were a one off, hopefully that's the case anyway. I will say right off the bat that these two levels are historically... not quite accurate. History nerd rant incoming. For one, the enemies in any Operation Torch mission should be Vichy French, as this is FRENCH North Africa, and the Germans and Italians were all way off to the east fighting the British. In the defense of the modders, I honestly didn't know Torch was solely Allies vs Vichy French until pretty recently. I always just figured the Germans and Italians were there alongside the French, but it turns out they were almost completely uninvolved. Medal of Honor Allied Assault also gets this wrong in its Torch mission, but CoD 2 Big Red One surprisingly gets it right! To be fair, can't reasonably expect the modders to mock up a whole new faction for just two missions, but still. I came up with a little head-canon story as to why the Germans are here, see above. Historical? No. Plausible? Maybe. Necessary? Not really, but who cares. Also of note is that there was no "Fedala Airfield" as far as I can tell. The closest airfields to Fedala were in Port Lyautey further north-east, taken by a different unit on a later day, and then Casablanca-Anfa Airport a few miles in the opposite direction - in Casablanca, which the 3rd ID was involved in taking, but as far as I can tell, the city and airfield were surrendered without a fight, and again, a few days later. Anfa is probably the most likely culprit here, but since this mission doesn't line up with any of the details surrounding Anfa's capture, I just chose to stick with what the game calls it - Fedala Airfield. Far from the only fictional locale in a WW2 CoD game I'm sure, so it is what it is. If we could just change the damn enemies to French... but oh well, not everyone is as autistically nitpicky as I am lmao! These are still very fun missions that were put together with a lot of skill and care. As always, using the United Fronts Mod, which combines CoD 1, UO and a ton of custom modded missions together into one massive campaign, with updates to textures, sounds, weapons, numerous quality of life tweaks and changes, etc. Check out their ModDB page for a more comprehensive description, links included below. No HUD, shut off via mod options. Didn't really add or change anything here, beyond a location subtitle at the beginning since there's no journal loading screen.
